Caution to Investors on Stock Market Scams Through Social Media

The widespread adoption of social media has transformed how we share information. Unfortunately, some entities exploit Social Media Platforms to deceive unsuspecting investors in the securities market. These entities employ various deceptive strategies to gain the trust of potential investors.

Common Tactics Used by Scammers

  • Unsolicited Invitations: Scammers often send unsolicited links to join WhatsApp or Telegram Groups (such as VIP Groups or Free Trading Courses) to entice prospective clients.
  • Fake Profiles: They create fraudulent profiles presenting themselves as experts in the stock market.
  • Impersonation: Frequently, they impersonate SEBI-registered intermediaries, well-known public figures, celebrities, or CEOs of established organizations.
  • Fake Testimonials: They mislead investors by showcasing fabricated testimonials from group members claiming substantial profits, tricking investors into transferring funds with false promises of high returns.

Investors are strongly urged to be cautious. Do not trust unsolicited messages from unverified individuals, and avoid joining questionable social media groups or communities offering guaranteed returns.

Guidelines for Investors

  • Engage only with SEBI-registered intermediaries. Always verify the registration status of entities with SEBI at the SEBI Registration Verification page before making any investments.
  • Conduct transactions solely through the official trading applications of SEBI-registered intermediaries found at SEBI Investor Support.
  • Communicate only through the genuine, verified social media handles and official email addresses of SEBI-registered entities.

Steps to Reduce Your Risk of Social Media Scams

  • Step One: Search for the Research Analyst's name on SEBI's official website.
  • Step Two: Obtain the official email address and phone number of that Research Analyst from the SEBI portal.
  • Step Three: Communicate regarding products and services exclusively through the contact details provided on the SEBI portal.
  • Step Four: If the analyst responds from the official email address, you can be assured you are communicating with a genuine SEBI-registered professional.
  • Step Five: Always pay after verifying details through the SEBI Check Platform, using a "@valid" UPI-ID, or through official bank channels.
  • Step Six: If an individual responds from a different email address and refuses to provide verifiable payment details, disregard the communication. They may be impersonators attempting to scam you.
